Cougar Canyon Elementary School from Delta, British Columbia, Canada, has chosen to raise money for World Land Trust (WLT). Students raised $1,000 at a movie night and the sale of tribal bracelets and tree seedlings, as well as an Amazon Rainforest trivia booth.

Kate, Camryn, Emmalee, Emma, Naya of STAR club (Save the Amazon Rainforest) sent us this account of their fundraising activities:

“In Grade 6 social studies, we learned about the Amazon Rainforest. When we discovered the importance of the Amazon Rainforest and how quickly it is being destroyed, we wanted to help protect it. We went to our teacher, Mr Hanly, and he supported our idea right away. Movie Night! We started to brainstorm. For 25 minutes every day, we planned our night. We threw around ideas and later we assigned jobs and gathered volunteers.  Our dream soon became a reality.

On 6 February 2015 at 6pm people started to arrive. A few minutes after, the whole gym was packed! At the event, we sold real Amazon tribe bracelets that were hand-made by a Yanomami tribe in the Amazon Rainforest. We also sold tree seedlings, concessions, and we even had an Amazon trivia booth!

Our goal was to raise enough money to purchase one acre of rainforest and protect it from illegal loggers. We wanted to raise awareness of the rainforest plight, that being our primary goal. We even have bracelet orders to fill. Altogether, we made enough money to purchase five acres!!!

We are excited to purchase these acres as soon as possible, so we can start protecting the rainforest!”
