New Buy an Acre project in Argentina SEARCH NEWS

In 2025, World Land Trust (WLT) is partnering with Aves Argentinas to protect the highly threatened Dry Chaco Forest ecosystem, a haven for unusual birdlife like the Chaco Owl.

We’re excited to announce a new Buy an Acre project supporting our partner Aves Argentinas to purchase 2,606 hectares (6,440 acres) of highly threatened Dry Chaco Forest within Traslasierra National Park, Argentina. This acquisition will offer vital protection for many threatened species, including the Vulnerable Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus).

A landscape under threat

In Argentina’s Córdoba Province, less than 5% of the region’s native Dry Chaco forests remain. Once stretching across vast swathes of northern Argentina, this unique ecosystem is now being rapidly lost to logging, wildfires, and cattle ranching.

Although Traslasierra National Park was created in 2018 to safeguard what’s left, much of the land within its vast 105,385-hectare (260,412-acre) boundary remains privately owned and is vulnerable to deforestation.

Without urgent protection, many extraordinary species could be lost forever. These include iconic raptors like the Crowned Solitary Eagle (Buteogallus coronatus), small rodents like Berg’s Tuco-tuco (Ctenomys bergi), and also specialist drought-tolerant trees such as the White Quebracho (Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco).

Conservation at a critical time

This new project marks a turning point for Traslasierra National Park. With your support, Aves Argentinas will secure 2,606 hectares (6,440 acres), as part of a wider 46,538-hectare (114,998-acre) land acquisition.

Once acquired, this land will significantly strengthen conservation in the region – giving park authorities the power to safeguard this ecosystem for the long term. It will also increase connectivity to neighbouring reserves, such as the Salinas Grandes Provincial Reserve and Ansenuza National Park. On top of this, the newly acquired land will create a habitat corridor with the Las Mesillas property, which is protected by World Land Trust (WLT) partner Fundación Biodiversidad Argentina (FBA).

We are delighted about Aves Argentinas’ new addition to the Buy an Acre programme – a project which will deliver real and tangible protection for the fragile and precious Dry Chaco Forest.
