Target reached for Brazil’s Atlantic Forest

In the week that we celebrate ‘A Million Acts of Hope’, we have some wonderful news to share about our Connecting Brazil’s Atlantic Forest appeal. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve reached our full £197,260 fundraising target.

Reaching our goal for this appeal shows how much of an impact donors in the UK can have across the world, perfectly summing up A Million Acts of Hope’s mission to celebrate small, meaningful actions that make real positive change.

With the funds raised, our partner REGUA can now save 180 ha (444 acres) of irreplaceable land in Brazil’s Guapiaçu valley, a crucial landscape that is essential for both wildlife and water.

The purchase of this vital property will expand REGUA’s existing reserve, building on their incredible work and connecting more fragmented forest. This is an essential mission considering only 12% of the original Atlantic Forest is left in Brazil. Your support will make a huge difference towards safeguarding the isolated forest patches that remain in the region, permanently protecting them before they are lost to the threats of deforestation and development.

Your donations to the appeal will:

● Enable our partner to expand the REGUA reserve in Brazil’s Guapiaçu valley by 180 ha (444 acres).

● Help to connect vulnerable forest fragments.

● Enable the employment of a ranger for one year.

● Protect the homes of hundreds of threatened species, many of which exist only in Brazil. Among these are the Critically Endangered Southern Muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides), White-necked Hawk (Buteogallus lacernulatus) and Brazilian Button Frog (Cycloramphus brasiliensis).

● Help to safeguard the Guapiaçu watershed, an essential area that provides water for over 2 million people in parts of Rio de Janeiro.

"We have been working with REGUA for over 20 years but the celebration of securing another piece of this vitally important forest brings just as much joy today as it did back then. With so little forest remaining that is both fragmented and contains some of the world’s most unique and endangered species, every fragment that we can protect is important. Thank you to all of you who contributed to this appeal, you are playing an important part in years of hard work and dedication to conserve Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.”
