HELP US EXPAND A CRUCIAL WILDLIFE CORRIDOR IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO

This summer, we urgently need your support to raise £287,821 so our partner Hutan can secure 16 ha (40.1 acres) of critically important forest within Borneo’s Kinabatangan floodplain.

The forests here are highly fragmented after decades of deforestation, leaving threatened wildlife like the Critically Endangered Northeast Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ssp. morio) and the Endangered Bornean Elephant (Elephas maximus ssp. borneensis) isolated in small forest patches.

This fragmentation is restricting wildlife movement and increasing conflict with people as animals are forced to move through human settlements and agricultural land to reach other isolated patches of protected forest. It is vital that we connect the forest that remains in this area and create pathways for species to travel safely through the landscape.

By donating to our ‘Act Now for Orangutans’ appeal you will help Hutan expand their Sungai Sukau wildlife corridor. Plus, the first £50,000 of donations will be matched, meaning your gift to the appeal could be doubled in value.

In a snapshot, your donation will:

● Secure 16 ha (40.1 acres) of largely intact secondary forest, extending Hutan’s Sungai Sukau wildlife corridor and strengthening connectivity across the wider Kinabatangan landscape

● Relieve a critical bottleneck for wildlife movement near the village of Sukau, thereby greatly reducing human-wildlife conflict, particularly for Bornean Elephants.

● Reduce the genetic isolation of sub-populations of Critically Endangered and threatened species, including the Northeast Bornean Orangutan and Bornean Elephant

● Stabilise riverbanks and protect riparian habitat along the Sungai Sukau River, thus supporting sustainable fisheries and local livelihoods

Together we can extend a vital wildlife corridor and give species more space to move safely.
