We’re delighted to announce that we’ve reached the full fundraising target for our Act Now for Orangutans appeal.
Thanks to our amazing World Land Trust supporters, Hutan now has the £287,871 needed to secure 16 ha (40.1 acres) of critically important forest within Borneo’s Kinabatangan floodplain.
The purchase of this land will extend Hutan’s existing Sungai Sukau wildlife corridor and connect more vital forest patches – crucial work in a landscape that has been left heavily fragmented by deforestation.
Connecting forest here will also help to create safe pathways for threatened species like the Critically Endangered Northeast Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ssp. morio) and the Endangered Bornean Elephant (Elephas maximus ssp. Borneensis).
Donations to the appeal will:
● Secure 16 ha of largely intact secondary forest, extending Hutan’s Sungai Sukau wildlife corridor and strengthening connectivity across the wider Kinabatangan landscape.
● Create a safer future for endangered wildlife by reconnecting fragmented forest that has been divided by decades of habitat loss.
● Reduce conflict between people and wildlife near the village of Sukau, particularly for Bornean Elephants. This will benefit both local communities and the iconic species that call the Kinabatangan home.
● Open up vital pathways so isolated populations of endangered wildlife such as the Northeast Bornean Orangutan and the Bornean Elephant have a better chance to find mates and raise the next generation.
● Stabilise riverbanks and riparian habitat along the Sungai Sukau River, to help safeguard this rich and vibrant river ecosystem and protect the natural resources that support both wildlife and local livelihoods.
"For almost 30 years, HUTAN has worked to protect the Kinabatangan, one of Malaysia’s most biodiverse regions and one of the few remaining floodplains in South-East Asia that retains natural forest cover. The Sungai Sukau Wildlife Corridor has long been a strategic priority for HUTAN and, thanks to your support, we are one step closer to making it a reality. Thank you for playing an important part in reconnecting vital forest habitat and protecting the species that depend on it."Gwynne Braidwood, Senior Conservation Programmes Officer at WLT
Thank you for your support
Protecting this land will make a tangible difference to the future of the Kinabatangan and its wildlife, and we couldn’t have done it without our incredible supporters. Thank you!
Please keep an eye on our news page and social media channels for future updates from Hutan as the project progresses.
