During Remember A Charity in your Will Week, we celebrate all those who take on extraordinary challenges to raise funds for charity. Winston Wolfrider is travelling across the USA on US$6 a day for World Land Trust (WLT). This is his story.
My journey began in Boston, Massachusetts, in the spring of 2014; my plan to navigate more than 4,000 miles, coast to coast across the United States of America.
To walk the whole way is not the challenge. Rather, I hope to complete the trek on a budget of just £2,000 (approximately US$3,035) without using trains or planes and by travelling via specific, environmental sites of interest (mostly in national parks).
I do not have a vehicle. I am documenting my adventure, and the pressures on some of the natural ecosystems which I visit.
At the time of writing and while sticking to budget, I have managed to cover a huge distance of roughly 15,000 miles so far. I am now heading through various national parks in Utah, on my way to one of my check points, the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Why raise funds for WLT?
Prior to this challenge, I worked in the waste management and recycling sector for five years in the UK, and even in such a short space of time, I could see massive quantities of unnecessary wastage from domestic and commercial producers.
Without a doubt, waste is affecting the way our planet is developing and increasing the pace at which our resources are dwindling. It’s also quickening the downfall of some of the planet’s most beautiful and fascinating natural landmarks and habitats – some of which, I will visit on my adventure.
I am raising awareness and funds for World Land Trust because it works internationally to purchase valuable land, to conserve ecosystems and to protect endangered wildlife. The issues that our natural world faces are global ones, yet we don’t need to travel as far as I am to find them.
Winston is supporting Remember A Charity’s Living Legends campaign which promotes the idea that, irrespective of age, anyone can become a living legend by including a charity they care about in their will.
