How big are the reserves World Land Trust has helped to protect?
All project areas supported by WLT can be found on our project map. Argentina (Patagonia)Ranch of Hopes Wildlife Refuge covers 15,000 acres (6,100 hectares). This is roughly the same size as the Island of Guernsey in the UK. BrazilThe REGUA project area covers over 19,000 acres (7,700 hectares). This is over 3 times the size of Lake Windermere, in the UK Lake District. BelizeRio Bravo Conservation & Management Area, which covers 4% of the total area of Belize, is approximately 260,000 acres (105,200 hectares). This is equivalent to the size of Hong Kong. Costa RicaA total of 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) have been protected in Costa Rica. This is approximately the size of the London borough, the City of Westminster. EcuadorThe WLT supported reserves in Ecuador cover over 34,000 acres (13,800 hectares). That is an area over half of the size of the New York City borough, Queens. GuatemalaWLT have helped to protect over 1,600 acres (675 hectares) of mangrove and other tropical forest in Guatemala. This is approximately twice the size of Regents Park in Central London. IndiaWLT have contributed to the protection of over 1,900 acres (780 hectares) of habitat for elephants in India, creating wildlife corridors that cover nearly twice the size of Wimbledon Common in South-West London. Malaysia (Borneo)The orang-utan habitat protected in Borneo covers over 650 acres (270 hectares). This is 1 ½ times the size of Monaco. Mexico1,779 aces (720 hectares) have been protected in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Mexico. That is over twice the size of Central Park, New York. ParaguayWLT have supported Guyra Paraguay in the purchase of three reserves in the three very different habitats in Paraguay; the Dry Chaco, Chaco-Pantanal and Atlantic Forest. Together, these protected areas cover almost 60,000 acres (24,300 hectares). This is 1 ½ times larger than Washington D.C. PhilippinesDanjugan Island consists of 106 acres (43 hectares) of tropical forest and coral reef. This is an area that could cover St James's Park, Central London. United KingdomThe WLT’s Kites Hill Reserve in the UK protects 40 acres (16 hectares) of native habitat. This is the size of 40 Rugby Pitches. VenezuelaWLT have protected over 1,700 acres (700 hectares) on Margarita Island. This is over 8 times the size of Battersea Park, London. |
