Patagonia Webcam Project

The WLT has been looking into the possibility of positioning webcams at some of its overseas projects. Webcams have the potential to increase awareness of our projects, and also potentially capture exciting or unusual behaviour. One example of wildlife webcams can be found at www.africam.com – here visitors can watch webcams of African wildlife, and save snapshots if they see anything unusual or interesting.

The Webcam positioned on the beach adjacent to the WLT property would film the activities of the seal colony and Killer Whales. This area was made famous by the BBC "Trials of Life" Programme with David Attenborough. You can see some footage of the Killer Whales in our Patagonia video.

Because of its location, using a webcam in Patagonia would require a Satellite internet link. A local microwave link would be needed to send the signal to the ranch from the beach, where the webcam could be located. The setup would be something along the lines of the following:

Patagonia WebCam Setup

In order to make this work, we would require the following: - note : these prices are based on quotes, and although as accurate as possible, should be treated as estimates.

  • Network Webcam - £300 to £1200 depending on features
  • Local radio link - £1700
  • Satellite internet connection $12,000* (to buy – currently finding out leasing and other options) $750 a month to run
  • Computer for La Esperanza - £600
  • Solar panels ~ £500 depending on power requirements
  • A weatherproof housing
  • A Team to provide training and construction of the webcam.

The World Land Trust is looking for sponsors to support the project. The WLT could provide sponsors with publicity, web links and webcam streams. If your company would like to become involved, or can offer any expertise, please contact us.
