Saving threatened habitats worldwide

Visit Colombia: Fundación ProAves partners with EcoTurs Colombia

View of Sierra Nevada

Key activities, species and places of interest

  • ProAves reserves protect 60 percent of all threatened birds occurring in Colombia, as well as numerous endangered amphibians, mammals and other species.
  • EcoTurs manages tours to many of the ProAves reserves and a number of other key locations. Scheduled and customised tours are available.
  • Activities include wildlife watching, hiking nature trails and horse riding.
  • Options to stay and participate in conservation volunteering activities at different reserves.

ProAves has established reserves across Colombia aimed at protecting the habitat of different species of threatened birds. They have teamed up with EcoTurs Colombia to offer high quality and safe birding and nature tours with all profits going to fund conservation activities with ProAves in Colombia.

It is also possible to book accommodation and travel independently to some of the reserves and there are also several options for volunteering on the reserves.

Fitness levels required

Walking at most of the reserves is relatively easy although there is some variability depending on particular trails. At some sites, horses can be provided for more difficult areas. Visitors should be aware that some people may experience the effects of altitude in elevated areas.

Seasonal information

Colombia's main dry season falls between December and March, with a shorter dry period between July and August. Rainfall and temperature vary depending on the reserves visited.
