Preserving the Atlantic Rainforests of Misiones, Argentina

Why protect the Atlantic Rainforest in Misiones?

Protecting the Atlantic Rainforest in Misiones is a high conservation priority:

  • Misiones covers only about 1% of Argentina but is the most diverse ecoregion in the country
  • High concentration of endemic species
  • Severe habitat destruction is taking place in this region

Why is the Atlantic Rainforest under threat?

Atlantic Forest habitat is being destroyed due to:

  • Exploitation for products such as timber and sugar cane
  • Forest clearance for coffee and soya plantation, cattle pastures, settlements, roads and the growth of cities

The Interior Atlantic Forest in Misiones originally covered about 25,700km2 (6,350,470 acres or 2,570,000 ha), but estimates suggest this has been reduced to about 16,000km2.

The Yabotí Biosphere Reserve is home to 116 mammal species, 548 bird species, 124 amphibian species and 222 fish species. Species found in the area include the Brazilian Merganser (Critically Endangered); Black-fronted Piping Guan (Endangered); Giant Otter (Endangered); Giant Anteater (Near Threatened); Jaguar (Near Threatened); Maned Wolf (Near Threatened); Tiger Cat (Near Threatened); and Harpy Eagle (Near Threatened).

This map shows the locations of the proposed reserve in Misiones. This is a relatively new project and photos and other resources are therefore limited.
