Yunguilla Reserve

Target size: 250 ha (620 acres)
Current size, May 2008: 140 ha (350 acres)

The Yunguilla reserve was created to protect the only known population of the Critically Endangered Pale-headed Brush-finch, which was rediscovered in 1999 after an absence of 30 years. The reserve comprises about 80 hectares of scrubby Andean hillside south west of Cuenca. Active conservation work based on research has led to an increase in the number of breeding pairs from 10 in 1999 to 40 in 2004 and 50 in 2005.
