World Land Trust Conservation Projects:

Current Active Conservation Projects

These are the current, active projects the World Land Trust is involved with, ordered alphabetically.

Argentina

Habitat Protection Projects in Argentina

Coastal Steppe Project, Patagonia

Ranch of Hopes (Estancia la Esperanza) consists of 15,000 acres of coastal steppe habitat in the Valdes Peninsula, Patagonia. The reserve is an official Wildlife Refuge and supporters can help fund the removal of old fencing to improve access for guanacos and other wildlife, as well as other work at the refuge.

Brazil

Urgent Land Purchase Projects in Brazil

REGUA Project, Brazil

The World Land Trust played an important part in establishing a reserve in the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil in the year 2000. The Atlantic rainforest is one of the most important eco-regions in the world, but only 7% of the original area remains, and it is becoming increasingly fragmented. The Trust is therefore raising funds for Reserva Ecologica De Guapi Assu (REGUA) in order to increase the reserve and protect the Atlantic rainforest against further losses.

Restoration and Habitat Protection Projects in Brazil

Restoration Ecology Projects

Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay

As part of the Carbon Balanced programme the WLT's Restoration Ecology Projects help rehabilitate cleared and degraded habitat. This provides two-fold benefits: regenerating important wildlife habitat and removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Individuals and businesses can contribute to the WLT's conservation projects by offsetting carbon dioxide emissions that they are unable to avoid.

Ecuador

Urgent Land Purchase Projects in Ecuador

Tropical Forest Project, Ecuador

The Tropical Forest project helps safeguard Ecuador's diverse wildlife in an area where over 80% of the tropical rainforests have already been destroyed, leaving many species globally threatened. The project protects critically important habitats for many of Ecuador's rarest bird species, as well as a wide variety of other animals such as Jaguar and Howler Monkey. There are currently seven reserves, all managed with the support and involvement of local communities.

India

Urgent Land Purchase Projects in India

Elephant Corridor Project, India

NEW appeal to create corridors for elephants and tigers! See our fundraising page on Justgiving.com.

The Elephant Corridor Project helps save important populations of Indian elephants by preventing forest fragmentation which seriously threatens the elephants' survival. The corridors link together existing wildlife reserves and not only provide a safe passage for elephants, but also a haven for other wildlife. The project currently focuses on two areas; Meghalaya State in north-east of India and Kerala State in the south of the country.

Kenya

Habitat Protection Projects in Kenya

Kenyan Grasslands Project

The Kinangop Grasslands of Kenya are the global stronghold of Sharpe’s Longclaw, an endangered bird species found only in Kenya. This habitat is without official protection and has almost entirely been converted to farmland.

Nature Kenya, with the support of WLT, intend to purchase 50 acres of grassland habitat and restore it to its original state.

Support the Kenyan Grasslands Appeal through online fundraising site JustGiving.com.

Malaysia

Habitat Protection Projects in Malaysia

Protecting Critical Corridors for Orang-utans in Borneo

NEW second Orang-utan Appeal: The World Land Trust is working with Malaysian LEAP Conservancy to create corridors to protect rainforest and to ensure continuous habitat for Orang-utans and other wildlife.

Mexico

Paraguay

Urgent Land Purchase Projects in Paraguay

Chaco/Pantanal Project, Paraguay

In 2005 a legacy enabled the creation of a 8,650 acre (3,600 ha) reserve in the grass and wetland habitat of the Chaco-Pantanal. Since then the Chaco-Pantanal reserve has been increased and the project has expanded to include land purchase of Interior Atlantic Forest habitat and land purchase and creation of a brand new reserve in the Dry Chaco.
