Wildlife Twinning - the World Land Trust in partnership with Zoos and Aquariums

Press Release dated: Friday, June 23, 2006

WILD SPACES is the name of an exciting new initiative launched by the World Land Trust at the annual conference of BIAZA (British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums), held at Chester Zoo in May.

This new initiative offers zoos and aquariums a unique opportunity to get involved with the work of the World Land Trust in creating protected nature reserves through supporting their current projects involving land acquisition in partnership with local organisations. Current projects include the development of sustainable farming alongside wildlife conservation in the coastal steppes of Patagonia; an innovative coral transplant project restoring degraded reefs in western India; and a carbon sequestration project in Ecuador. There is also the potential for developing new projects as the World Land Trust is always on the alert for new areas requiring urgent protection.

The Trust has embarked on this partnership with zoos and aquariums to strengthen the important role that they can play in the conservation of wild species and their habitats. Many of the animals found on World Land Trust reserves are popular in zoos, thereby creating a crucial link between captive breeding programmes and their contribution to conservation in the wild. It also provides a strong education message to visitors of zoos and aquariums highlighting the role they have to play in conservation of wild animals.

The new initiative was enthusiastically received by the zoo and aquarium community and is already leading to cooperative projects between the World Land Trust and BIAZA members.

With nearly 20 years experience in protecting some of the world's most biologically diverse habitats, the World Land Trust has an extensive knowledge of developing and managing successful conservation projects in the field. The Trust was launched in 1989, by the doyen of the zoo world, the late Gerald Durrell and its patrons include Sir David Attenborough. Through its network of local partners the WLT has been instrumental in the permanent protection of more than 300,000 acres of rainforests and other habitats in Central and South America, India, the Philippines and the UK.

Give the World a Present Whilst Selling on eBay

Press Release dated: Friday, June 09, 2006

Now you can help protect endangered habitats worldwide whilst selling your items on eBay.

As a registered charity the World Land Trust can now accept donations from eBay sellers who choose to donate a percentage of their eBay earnings to charity. The items will be featured in eBay for charity listings and means you can give the world a present every time you make a sale.

The procedure is simple: once you have registered with Mission Fish (a charity acting as a middleman between eBay users and other charities), selected the World Land Trust (WLT) as the benefiting charity and your item has successfully sold, after shipping and receiving the money the seller passes the agreed donated percentage to Mission Fish who then directs it to the World Land Trust.

The listed charity items will appear with an "eBay for charity icon" along with the WLT logo and the percentage of the price donated to charity and will be an added incentive for people to bid.

Gift Aid will also be claimed where eligible and if you donate 100% of the earnings, Mission Fish will take no administration fee. For more instructions on how it works go to http://pages.ebay.co.uk/community/charity/FAQ.html#16.

The World Land Trust is making further use of eBay for charity by holding an online auction of wildlife pictures by renowned artist and WLT trustee Bruce Pearson with all proceeds going to save endangered habitats. The first auction is being held by supporter Giles Henderson on behalf of the WLT and demonstrates how you can save wildlife whilst selling on eBay for charity. So go and have a look by searching for "Bruce Pearson limited addition print" on eBay.co.uk and start your bidding!

For more details on the upcoming auctions and to have a look at some of the work available go to http://www.worldlandtrust/support/bruce-pearson.htm or sign up to our monthly eBulletin.

How far can green go? TravelRepublic.co.uk takes green a step further with World Land Trust Carbon Balanced

Press Release dated: Wednesday, June 07, 2006

The World Land Trust, an international conservation charity, (patron Sir David Attenborough), is helping the UK's fastest growing online travel businesses, TravelRepublic.co.uk, to take "going green" a step further. TravelRepublic.co.uk came to the WLT wanting to do something about the carbon dioxide emissions from their flights and also pledges to put something back into the planets biodiversity, which is as much under threat from climate change as we are.

TravelRepublic.co.uk, who have enjoyed staggering success in the £4.5billion UK online travel market, have been for some time considering how best to give something back to the environment. After careful consideration they decided that it wasn't enough for them simply to offer a carbon offset service to their clients and regenerate forest, they wanted to guarantee that for every customer that books with them they are preserving a tree in the existing rainforest.

John Burton, CEO of the WLT, commented "The significant feature of the support of TravelRepublic.co.uk is that it not only combats the very real issues of carbon emissions, but does it in a way that also helps conserve biodiversity. By protecting existing forests, endangered species can be saved, as well as preventing carbon being released when forests are destroyed."

TravelRepublic.co.uk hopes that its move will have wide reaching implications for the travel industry. Paul Furner, Managing Director of TravelRepublic.co.uk said "we want to help the environment and protect endangered species, but it is also important to us to lead the way within the travel industry. This is something that all travel companies should be addressing right now, and if we can make them think about taking action then we will be happy."

Sir David Attenborough strongly supports the work of the Trust and has released a statement saying "I welcome WLT's new Carbon-balancing programme as a way of helping put back what we are taking away. I would urge everyone to think deeply about what is important in life and to consider the consequences of daily activities. Balancing your carbon emissions with the WLT means that we are able to put even more back in to our key objectives - acquiring land for conservation."

Every single one of us is responsible for releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and driving global warming, and many of these emissions are unavoidable. But by carbon balancing your holiday with TravelRepublic.co.uk and the World Land Trust you can now not only fly carbon neutral, but also help preserve our planets most threatened habitats and biodiversity.

Sir David Attenborough urges the UK to Carbon Balance with the World Land Trust

Press Release dated: Friday, June 02, 2006

Sir David Attenborough must be congratulated for his profound documentary on climate change which hit our screens on Wednesday evening and left viewers in no doubt that climate change is having a devastating effect on our planet now. Climate change represents the largest single environmental challenge this century and we all must act now in order to pioneer a new era of environmentally responsible earthlings capable of saving the planet (with a little help from the World Land Trust)!

Sir David Attenborough is a patron of the World Land Trust, a UK registered charity with a seventeen year track record in conservation and preservation of threatened habitat and biodiversity. Through its tree planting and rainforest conservation projects WLT fights to reduce pressure on our climate and launched its innovative Carbon Balancing programme in March 2005.

Through the World Land Trust it costs £6.15 to offset one tonne of CO2. Average CO2 emissions per head in the UK are 3.06 tonnes costing the average individual a mere £18.77 to offset. With climate change clearly having a devastating effect on our planet how can we afford to ignore it?

Sir David Attenborough strongly supports the work of the Trust and released a statement saying "I welcome WLT's new Carbon-balancing programme as a way of helping put back what we are taking away. I would urge everyone to think deeply about what is important in life and to consider the consequences of daily activities. Balancing your carbon emissions with the WLT means that we are able to put even more back in to our key objectives - acquiring land for conservation."

The World Land Trust Carbon Balance programme gives companies and individuals alike a clear goal to assess, reduce and offset your emissions whilst providing the opportunity to invest in the planets climate and biodiversity.

Every single one of us is responsible for releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and driving global warming, and many of these omissions are unavoidable. But by donating £18.77 per year to carbon balance your daily activities and each time you fly logging onto the World Land Trust website to offset your flight emissions you will be making a positive impact on the environment and saving biodiversity.
