World Land Trust all set for record-breaking year

Press Release dated: Thursday, December 15, 2005

Fund raising for conservation charity the World Land Trust (WLT) in 2005 is all set to break previous records despite the massive set-backs caused by the tsunami and Himalayan earthquake which impacted fund-raising for wildlife and the natural environment. The WLT office is currently working flat out trying to keep pace with the flood of donations for Christmas gifts. According to the WLT's Chief Executive, John Burton, this has been as a direct result of the Trust's internet presence. "Very few other charities, particularly the smaller ones, have committed themselves to the internet in the way that the WLT has. By investing in the internet over the past three years, the WLT has expanded its supporter base dramatically. This has enabled us to form new partnerships and develop new projects."

John Burton has just returned from Paraguay, where the WLT's latest partner Guyra Paraguay, with funding from the WLT is going to purchase the first reserve in the Pantanal region of Paraguay. The Pantanal and Chaco region of Paraguay form one of the world's last great wildernesses, much of which still remains unexplored. The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, stretching across NW Brazil into S Bolivia and N E Paraguay. The new reserve will include a mosaic of chaco, palm savannah and pantanal habitats, and will protect endangered species such as the three giants: Giant Otter, Giant Armadillo and Giant Ant-eater, as well as the spectacular Hyacinth Macaws, Jaguar and Jacare Caiman. A £25 donation to the World Land Trust really does save an acre of wildlife habitat -- in real places, where the donor can usually go and see what has been achieved.
