World Land Trust Launches Carbon Balancing Service For Suffolk Businesses

Press Release dated: Monday, April 18, 2005

Suffolk businesses that review their energy policies now will benefit from increased efficiency and profitability, says carbon balancing experts, The World Land Trust.

The Suffolk-based environmental charity has developed a simple three step carbon audit programme - ASSESS ... OFFSET ... REDUCE - available to businesses who want to address their carbon emissions in advance of legislation which will force them to do so, regardless of who wins the general election.

The organisation is calling for action from local businesses to make Suffolk top of the World Land Trust's UK league table, to be published later this year.

ASSESS ... REDUCE ... OFFSET

To help businesses to ASSESS their emissions The World Land Trust has developed a free on-line carbon audit at www.carbonbalanced.org. This is the first stage for any company working towards becoming carbon balanced. Simple to complete, the carbon audit allows the World Land Trust, in association with CRed* to make recommendations for a policy to REDUCE energy consumption and carbon emissions. For essential emissions, the World Land Trust can provide a programme to OFFSET carbon pollution.

Tackling carbon emissions is increasingly important for many reasons. Increased awareness of climate change and the UK's presidency of G8 have put this issue on the business agenda. There are many business advantages to being carbon balanced, including:
  • Increased efficiency
  • Motivated workforce
  • Increased profit
  • Consumer appeal
  • News value
  • City/investor appeal
The Operating and Financial Review (OFR) coming into force this month requires quoted firms to report the social, community and environmental issues that impact them, bringing CSR further up the agenda for all businesses. The World Land Trust's carbon balancing programme is an ideal way to meet CSR targets and responsibilities.

*CRed (carbon reduction) was founded by the School of Environmental Sciences (ENV) at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
