Love Your Zoo week is a great opportunity for the public to visit local zoos and aquariums to learn just how much they do for conservation - and to have a great day out as well! In 2014, Love Your Zoo week ran from 24-31 May.
The Love Your Zoo campaign was launched by BIAZA, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. During the week dozens of zoos, aquariums and wildlife centres across Britain and Ireland put on special events to showcase their collections and conservation initiatives.
Zoos and aquariums play a vital role in biodiversity conservation by keeping collections of endangered species, by supporting conservation in the wild and through education programmes.
Between them, BIAZA members take part in about 600 research projects every year, many of which measure animal behaviour with the aim of improving welfare. Annually they participate in more than 1,000 conservation projects every year, and they contribute about £12millon a year to field projects.
The Wild Spaces programme of World Land Trust (WLT) offers zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks an opportunity to fund wildlife conservation in project areas supported by WLT. In 2014, WLT and BIAZA are jointly promoting BIAZA Buy an Acre to raise funds to save species by purchasing and protecting land of conservation value in Sierra Gorda, Mexico.
