The Festival of Wildlife, a unique celebration of Borneo’s wildlife held by the travel company Wildlife Worldwide, raised £10,000 in their charity auction for World Land Trust’s (WLT) project in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

The funds were presented by Nick Joynes, Co-director of Wildlife Worldwide, to Dan Bradbury, WLT Head of Development, at the British Birdwatching Fair on 19 August 2017.

“The Festival of Wildlife was there to experience the incredible wildlife in the Kinabatangan and Danum Valley and learn from wildlife experts in workshops,” Nick told WLT. “We wrapped up the festival with an auction, as we always do, and that auction was to raise money for the projects that World Land Trust have in this very region of Borneo.

“We are very happy to announce that we have raised £10,000 through that auction, which was a really fantastic effort from our clients.”

Threats facing Kinabatangan

Nick spoke about how visiting the area had affected his views of the threats facing this habitat: “I myself was amazed with Borneo how fragile that ecosystem really is, it’s on a knife edge. It’s a two hour drive between Danum Valley and Kinabatangan and I just saw nothing but Oil Palm on that entire journey.”

WLT supports their local partner Hutan in Borneo to purchase and protect the fragmented forest close to the banks of the Kinabatangan River. The funds from the Festival of Wildlife will support further land protection in this area.
