Reflecting on Brexit

8 July, 2016 - 16:17 -- John Burton
Britain and EU split

We have now had time to reflect on Brexit and what it means for us and international conservation.

I happened to be in Armenia when the result was announced, and our Armenian colleagues could not believe the result. They simply could not understand the mentality of those who wanted out. Nor could I.

Looking at the result in simplistic terms, two weeks on, it has meant that we can do a lot less for our partners. We raise most of our funds in pounds. After the referendum Pound Sterling sank 10% in value to its weakest point since 1985, and this is significant for us.

We will have to work a lot harder to maintain the current planned expenditure. Perhaps the pound will recover.  It would be even better if it got a lot stronger, but that seems very unlikely.

We are also concerned that the general instability will stop people donating, so please spread the word and encourage support. We need it more than ever.
