Sevenoaks School Buy an Acre rewards excellence

Dr Matt Edwards, Head of Sixth Form at Sevenoaks School, has come up with an inspired idea to reward his students’ performance with a donation to World Land Trust’s Buy an Acre Appeal.

Every time the students achieve 100 distinctions (small awards for strong pieces of work), the school will make a donation of £100 to World Land Trust (WLT) to purchase an acre of land.

“This means that the students’ academic effort has an effect beyond their own environment, and makes a difference in the world,” Matt explains.

“Both staff and students are excited and motivated by this idea, and I hope it will lead to more distinctions being issued and more land being saved.”

So far the students’ excellence has resulted in one acre saved. Matt tells WLT that his students are already working towards the next 100 distinctions.

Kelly Jacobs, WLT Education & Outreach Manager, adds: "This is an original idea and it is good to know that the prospect of buying an acre of rainforest is really encouraging students to do their best. Well done to all!"
