Saving threatened habitats worldwide

Valentine’s green gift for nature lovers

5 February, 2013 - 15:09 -- World Land Trust
Rainforest in the Guapi Assu Reserve, Brazil

Share your passion for protecting the natural world this Valentine’s Day by planting trees to improve rainforest habitat

In a nature reserve in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, supported by World Land Trust (WLT), you can plant at least five trees for your Valentine to help improve this habitat for threatened wildlife.

This original Valentine’s present is the perfect way to share your love for protecting the world’s wilderness. For as little as £25, this environmentally-friendly gift will help expand the reserve’s natural forest by connecting fragmented and isolated patches of trees to create a continuous habitat for endangered animals.

King of the Jungle takes cover

Having space to roam under forest cover is especially important for far-ranging animals, like the Puma. King of the jungle, the Puma is a top predator and is known to travel through the reserve in search of food, mating partners to breed, or to avoid conflict with people.

All the trees being planted are native species and many provide fruits for rainforest animals; by replanting these species we hope to improve the food supply for wildlife living in nearby forests, improving their survival prospects.

Nature reserve’s safe haven

Your Valentine’s trees will be planted in the Guapi Assu Reserve, a natural sanctuary for an array of threatened wildlife that protects over 18,000 acres of Atlantic Rainforest in the coastal state of Rio de Janeiro.

Once stretching in huge swathes throughout Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, the Atlantic Rainforest has been reduced isolated patches of forest; in the past 100 years about 93 per cent has been lost. It is now vital that we save as much of the remaining rainforest fragments as possible and work to improve this habitat for the species that depend on it for their survival.
