International conservation charity, World Land Trust (WLT), will be rising to the 2011 Big Give Christmas Challenge this week, in an ambitious attempt to raise £200,000 for conservation. The Christmas Challenge is a concept developed by an innovative philanthropic trust who generously supports charities by ‘matching’ funds raised through charity pledges and an online giving week, which will take place this year from the 5th – 9th December. In simple terms, existing WLT supporters will pledge a total of £50,000, which the Big Give will match if the public online donations reach £100,000 in the five day window, totalling a staggering £200,000.

A major problem facing WLT is that worldwide land prices are escalating at an alarming rate. Just a few years ago World Land Trust could fund the purchase of threatened tropical forest in Brazil for £50 an acre. Today, land prices in Brazil have escalated and the same land costs around £400 an acre. But WLT can still save pristine tropical forests in several countries for £100 an acre and the Big Give Christmas Challenge now provides the Trust with a golden opportunity to fund the purchase of critically threatened acres at the same rate as last year despite land prices rising, through matched funding.

World Land Trust, whose patron is Sir David Attenborough, raises crucial funds for the purchase of critically threatened habitats around the world, and the wildlife that depend on them. Sir David Attenborough is backing WLT’s Christmas Challenge and says:

‘WLT save as much threatened land as they can. It is the land that is important when saving wildlife and I am right behind them. I urge you to join in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge’.

The WLT Buy an Acre Fund supports projects where threatened tropical forests and other vital habitats can be purchased for £100 an acre in Ecuador, Guatemala, Colombia and Mexico. Never has the need to purchase and protect our world’s most precious habitats been more urgent and WLT is determined to make the most of the opportunity the Big Give offers. If WLT’s target of £200,000 is reached, approximately 2,000 acres of pristine forests, together with their rich tapestry of wildlife all depending on it for their survival, will be saved forever!
