Massive Christmas donations drop to World Land Trust

22 December, 2011 - 15:35 -- John Burton

Is it just the recession biting or has The Big Give disrupted online donations to the World Land Trust?

It is too early to know the answer, but what we have recorded is a sharp decline in online donations in the November to December period in 2011 compared with 2010 and 2009. We tried to encourage as many of our donors as possible to support us through the Big Give Christmas Challenge, an online fundraising scheme that ran between  5 to 9 December, but this proved to be a complete fiasco.

The Big Give website was completely shut down on the first day and dysfunctional to varying degrees for the rest of the week. We know for a fact that many of our supporters gave up trying to make a donation. Despite the claims made by The Big Give in their publicity, it only attracted the merest handful of new donors (less than 20).

So we are making a plea to any of our existing donors who were put off by being unable to donate through the Big Give, to make their donation before the end of the year. We have a shortfall of over £25,000 this Christmas that could result in us funding 250 acres less than we planned. We don’t want to let our partner organisations down.

Now we have had time to digest, it seems like there was a bit of both involved. But certainly the failings of the Big Give did result in a significant loss of donations.
