Musings on the 2009 BirdFair 

Last weekend was a busy weekend for the World Land Trust, as we had our stand at the British Birdwatching Fair, at Rutland Water. Our stand always features our partners, and this year representatives from Guyra Paraguay and REGUA, Brazil attended along with staff of the WLT. I arrived on Thursday night for the set up and spent a very enjoyable day there on Friday.

The great thing about the BirdFair is seeing old friends, many of which I only see at the BirdFair these days. But our stand is also visited by some of our most loyal and committed supporters. Every year, since we first started attending the BirdFair, Major general Sir John Chapple calls at our stand -- he was one of our very first supporters in the days when we launched Programme for Belize. Sir John had been commander of the British Forces in Belize, and always retained a special affection for the country and its wildlife. And that is what makes the World Land Trust special -- its partnerships. Many of our supporters have particular interests in an individual country, and are able to support long-term sustainable conservation through the WLT's partnership network.

Many of the visitors this year were particularly keen to know about our new projects in Africa and, in fact following the BirdFair, where she was representing Nature Kenya, Catherine Ngarachu is spending time working in the WLT office, and helping with our fundraising for Sharpe's Longclaw, one of Kenya's rarest birds.

The BirdFair is a great institution, about which I having nothing but praise -- save for one thing; the food on sale, which leaves much to be desired...

If you visited the BirdFair, I would very much like to hear your views, about the fair in general, and about our stand in particular.

Small correction, the Birdfair is a joint effort between Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust AND the RSPB, and yes the food is terrible

Many, Many Apologies; it's a mistake I have made too many times, and I know how important it is to recognise all the partners in events like this. I should be severely admonished, as the WLT is always going on about partnerships and how important they are. Mea culpa.

I've changed the post from saying "RSPB's Annual BirdFair" to "British Birdwatching Fair" - with a link to the Birdfair site so that readers can see who's behind the event.
