Heat tolerant algae helps reefs survive global warming

Coral geneticists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science have found that many corals store several types of algae which can improve their ability to cope with warmer water.

Flamingos threatened by industrial plant

The RSPB have condemned the proposals for an industrial plant to be built next to lake Natron. A place to see one of Africas greatest spectacles, where 75% of the worlds populations of lesser flamingos gather to breed in the summer.

Natural selection at work

A remarkable example of natural selection has been documented by a team of international researchers. Within 10 generations, spanning less then a year, the proportion of male Hypolimnas bolina (a butterfly found on the island of Savaii) jumped from 1 percent of the population to about 39 percent, a stunning comeback credited to the rise of a suppressor gene that holds a male killing bacteria in check.

Clones - the way to save a species

A $9 million project to try and clone some of Malasyias threatened leatherback turltes, which are on the verge of extinction was launched in Kuala Lumpur.
