Brazil Amazon deforestation jumps

New data, based on satellite images of the Amazon Rainforest, suggests that an area larger than the state of New Jersey has been logged during 2004. The figures are preliminary, but indicate that there has been no decline in deforestation of the Amazon forest this year - but an increase. Most of the increase in deforestation appear to have occurred along a road running through the heart of the forest - a road that the Brazilian government are planning to pave. Constructions such as roads, dams or pipelines make access to the forest easier and are therefore considered the biggest threat to the Amazon Rainforest.
