World Bank subsidies threaten Congo's rainforest

Latest News Headlines

Earlier this year Rainforest Foundation revealed that the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization wanted to create "favorable climate for industrial logging" in the rainforest mostly located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This is the world's second largest intact rainforest and now the world's major environment, development and human rights groups have called on the World Bank to stop these plans. The organisations, which include WWF, Rainforest Foundation and Greenpeace, made a statement at the Forest Forum in Kinshasa on November 13, calling on the World Bank and government of the Democratic Republic of Congo "to maintain a moratorium on the issuing of any new logging concessions unless strict conditions are complied with".
