Oil firm to drill inside Amazon reserve in Ecuador

Ecuador's government yesterday gave the go ahead for a Brazil state-owned oil firm, Petrobras, to drill in an Amazon forest reserve.

Petrobras, one of three oil companies now allowed to drill in the reserve, is expected to invest US$100 million in the country over the next five years. Although the Ecuador goverernment emphasises that Petrobras has met all the legal requirements, following a year of environmental impact studies, the decision prompted a court challenge by environmentalists and indigenous groups who warn that the three oil companies will now be able to drill virtually throughout the reserve.
