Estimates of Amazon's greenhouse gas 'too low'

The Amazon forest is releasing much more greenhouse gas than previously estimated, according to scientists from Brazil's National Institute of Amazon Research. Forest burning and logging relased about 400 million tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent gas in 2003 according to the scientists - this is 60 percent more than other estimates, which did not take into account gas released by rotting vegetation.

Other scientists dipute this theory however, and the issue is politically sensitive - Brazil is to publish an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions later this year.
