Notes: The Auer method of nature printing involved pressing the fern between a steel sheet and a soft lead sheet, and then printing from the impression left in the lead sheet. However, because the lead was soft only relatively few impressions could be printed; these were subsequently hand coloured.
The plates on sale are from a badly damaged disbound copy of the first edition, (1855), of the ferns of Great Britain and Ireland by Thomas Moore (1821-1887). A copy of this work with all 51 plates is very rare.
