Painting primarily with watercolour and occasionally with acrylic and oils, Elizabeth James works in a fluid, expressive style to portray the atmosphere of a place and time rather than topographical detail. She blends other materials and mediums and often uses charcoal, pastel, wax and sand with watercolour to add another dimension to her paintings.
The landscape is the main inspiration for Elizabeth’s artistic practice and in particular East Anglia’s landscape, coast and wide open skies. She’s interested in the way the weather and changing seasons mark the passage of time and affect the mood of the sea, sky and landscape.
Elizabeth completed a BA Hons in Fine Art in the 1980s and returned to study for an MA in Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts in 2009. She is now working full-time as an artist. Elizabeth lives in Stowmarket and is a member of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists and Suffolk Open Studios.
