Alternate Umbrella

Sunday 23rd September 2007
Southwold, Suffolk

Last year the World Land Trust entry for the 'Alternative Clock' won First Prize in the Team category, with its 'Linnaeus Floral Clock', and on 23 September this year we made it two-in-a-row.

Designed by volunteers Sally Metcalfe and her husband Jeremy Seeley, who run their own design company called Drab, our 'umbrella' was made from 100% recycled materials which included camouflage netting, huge green leaves cut from a sheet of old green plastic, rainforest animals begged and borrowed, wood chips from garden shredding and an Umbrella Bird which Sally cloned from a stuffed Raven belonging to her son, Jed! The trees themselves were victims of John Burton's recent coppicing in his area of woodland and visitors were encouraged to search for the Umbrella bird in the canopy using our binoculars (made from the cardboard innard of toilet rolls). The stand was very popular, particularly with children who loved looking through the binoculars and searching for lizards, snakes and butterflies among the foliage. The prize was £250.

Next year's challenge is 'Alternative Wheelbarrow' so if anyone has ideas for a possible World Land Trust theme do let us know as we'd love to make it three-in a-row. (www.flyingegg.co.uk)
