Wyken Hall, Suffolk
Monday, 24th July 2006
The World Land Trust and Lady Carlisle of Wyken Hall in Suffolk hosted an Art Masterclass with Bruce Pearson a WLT Trustee and one of Britain's best-known wildlife artists, on 24 July. No particular level of ability was required at the informal workshop, promoted by Country Living magazine, but Bruce was able to give one-to-one advice and tuition to the participants who, by the end of the day, had produced some enviable artwork. The gardens and woodland at Wyken provided inspirational subjects to draw and a wonderful lunch was enjoyed in the Leaping Hare Vineyard Restaurant. We thank Lord and Lady Carlisle for making their home and gardens available to the World Land Trust group.

The Linnaeus Floral Clock was contained in an old iron bedstead, presided over by Linnaeus himself. Flowers opened and closed according to the time of day. Joint First Prize winners in the Group entry and the 'Peoples' Vote'.Alternative Clock Competition, Southwold
Sunday 23rd July 2006
Every year on a Sunday in July the main street of Southwold in Suffolk is closed to traffic for the annual Adnams Flying Egg Alternative' competition. This year competitors entered the Alternative Clock exhibition and WLT took part for the first time, with a highly original version of The Linnaeus Clock. Linnaeus (the founder of modern botany) invented a clock of flowers that come out or close at different times of the day and as it is the Linnaean Tercentenary coming up, it is is even more appropriate that the Trust should have chosen this theme.
With almost a hundred clocks entering the competition, ranging from Michael Fish's Climate Change Clock to one man who stood inside his own prison cell in his entry called Doing Time, the WLT's entry was awarded joint First Prize in the Group entry and won £500. The Floral Clock also won the People's Vote. Thanks to sponsors: Woottens of Wenhaston (for supplying the plants), Bed Bazaar in Framlingham (for the bed), The Linnean Society of London for the information on Linnaeus and Sally and Jeremy Seeley of Drab who designed the stand.

Elaine Shaughnessy (right), WLT Council Member and Head of Development of the Linnean Society of London, talks with Byron Swift (centre) from WLT-US and Mark Hoogeslag (Netherlands Committee for IUCN).Suffolk
Wednesday 5th July 2006
The evening of 5 July was sunny and cloudless for WLT's Rose Garden Reception, taking place at one of the finest examples of a small Tudor hall in Suffolk, set within spectacular moated gardens.
The Rose Garden was indeed a breathtaking sight. An invited group of East Anglian supporters were able to meet with WLT Trustees, Council members and staff and also overseas visitors who included Byron Swift and Richard Moore from World Land Trust-US (formerly World Parks), USA, who had come over to discuss the alliance with WLT, Jerry Bertrand, WLT's Honorary President, also from the United States and Juan Francisco Facetti, a board member of Guyra Paraguay (WLT's Paraguayan partners) and former Minister of Environment in Paraguay.
We thank Prince and Princess Andrew von Preussen who kindly made this beautiful venue available for the occasion.
