Fundraising for the Rainforests of Brazil

Garnet Mesa Elementary School, USA successfully raised enough money to purchase 20 acres of Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. The students made a variety of artwork and crafts to display throughout the school, following this an article was printed in the local newspaper inviting the local community to show their support and visit the schools Art Show raising over $600. The school raised a further $350 on a Save The Rainforest wrist band sale. The school proudly wore their wrist bands at the last assembly in May to show their support towards the rainforest project.

What inspired Garnet Mesa Elementary school to help save the rainforest

"I was inspired to do this project this year as our first grade Core Knowledge curriculum includes habitats and ecology. We always do a big unit on the rainforest, including written reports and building a rainforest in the hallways. I took a great college course through the School of Mines in Denver, CO USA in the summer and was extremely motivated to use our curriculum to make a difference. So a committee was started and we just concluded our third fundraiser." (Denise Theobald, First Grade Teacher)

Garnet Mesa Elementary School were really successful at their fundraising activities and we were pleased to include the school in the WLT Fundraising Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognises schools that have used imaginative and unusual methods to help save wilderness and wildlife by raising money for the World Land Trust.
