Atlantic Rainforest Projects in Brazil

Guapi Acu Rainforest

Guapi Acu Reserve

The WLT was delighted to have been able to help set up the Guapi Acu project, working in the important Atlantic Rainforest of S.E. Brazil. The Reserva Ecologica de Guapi Acu project area is located in the coastal states of Rio de Janiero, Sao Paulo and Espirito Santo and is an important area of endemism within the Atlantic Rainforests The reseve spans 200m to 2,000m above sea level providing a range of unique habitats.

As of February 1st 2000, the Guapi Acu Reserve is part of a fully independent charity. The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest Trust (BART see below) has been set up, with Professor Sir Ghillean Prance among its Trustees.

The World Land Trust was pleased to have been involved in this project and through Trustee Dr Gerard Bertrand, the Trust was able to provide vital links with BirdLife International, in his capacity of Chairman of the latter.

The World Land Trust will continue to support initiatives to conserve the Atlantic Rainforest, but is also pleased to announce the development of a new initiative in the flooded forests of the Amazon. Details will appear on the web site shortly.

Although the World Land Trust is no longer actively involved in supporting the Guapi Acu Reserve, we will continue to keep supporters informed of interesting developments as they occur.

New Project Support in Atlantic Rainforests of Brazil

Because of the importance of the Atlantic Rainforests of Brazil, the WLT is looking at another area of threatened forests close to Guapi Acu. WLT is proposing to support a project identified by BirdLife International as of the highest priority, following a detailed assessment. This area is included in their list of Key Areas for Threatened Birds in the Americas. The WLT Trustees are meeting with representatives of BirdLife International in late May to discuss the project commitment in greater detail and further information will be available after this time.
