Endemic birds threatened in the Atlantic Rainforests of S.E. Brazil

These pictures appeared in the print version of the Spring 1999 WLT Newsletter

The birds featured here are ONLY FOUND IN THE RAINFORESTS OF SOUTH-EAST BRAZIL. They were mist-netted and identified by Stephen Knapp before being released back into the wild. If you care about saving these birds, please send a donation to the WLT earmarked for the Guapi Acu Reserve Project.

Thank You.

Black-cheeked Gnateater. This bird, endemic to the lowland understory of mature secondary and primary forests, is featured on the project’s logo. Rufous-backed Antvireo. Another endemic with an extremely restricted range. This tiny bird is rare and threatened with extinction.
Blue Manakin. These birds perform incredible dances (or leks) to attract the duller green females. Russet-winged Spadebill. Although common in the area, this bird has only a tiny range in the SE corner of Brazil.
Serra do Mar Tyrannulet - endemic to a tiny region of the Mata Atlantica. Yellow-browed Wood-pecker. A rare endemic, restricted to the humid montane forests.
