David Gower and Wildlife Conservation

Until he was six, David Gower’s family lived in Tanganyika in Africa (now Tanzania). From a young age he was lucky enough to go to the big game parks and that is where his interest in wildlife was awakened.

He subsequently went back to Africa when he played cricket and revisited the haunts of his childhood on many occasions. He particularly enjoyed Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and Kenya; although he says big organised safaris aren’t for him.

During his professional life he has travelled widely and always makes a point of using time-off for wildlife watching. From an early age, not unsurprisingly, it was the large mammals that captivated him, but he then became interested in birds and says that nowadays he enjoys all wildlife and finds it a wonderful to relax after a hectic work schedule.

David is now a journalist and commentator. He has also written several books and assigned the Public Lending Rights in all of them to WLT’s Green Ink project, whereby WLT benefits every time a registered book is loaned from a public lending library. He has also encouraged many of his author-colleagues to assign the rights in their books too.

David has represented the Trust at several public events including an event dedicated to Danjugan Island at the Royal Geographical Society when he launched the Philippine Reef & Rainforest Project’s video, which he narrated. He has also spoken at WLT events held at the Society of Wildlife Artists and at a Green Ink reception held in the Media Centre at Lords cricket ground.
