The WLT's Position on Goats and Goat Giving

Over the past year John Burton, the Chief Executive of the WLT has written extensively about the issue of goats in Africa, and has broadcast on Radio and TV criticising the marketing of goats by aid charities. So what is the WLT's position, and is John speaking on behalf of the WLT?

The WLT is an organisation established to conserve threatened habitats and the species that live in them. It does this primarily by helping purchase privately owned lands, and then putting them in the ownership of local NGOs. But also within its remit is education about matters relating to the conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitats.

Since goats are almost universally accepted by conservationists as being one of the main causes of environmental degradation in fragile habitats, when they occur in those habitats, making the public aware of these issues is clearly an important part of the WLT's mission.
