World Land Trust Conservation Projects:

Current Active Conservation Projects

World Land Trust supports several types of projects, all with the primary aim of protecting habitats for wildlife:

Urgent Land Purchase and Protection Projects

Buy an Acre Fund Projects

Project areas where £50 saves One Acre: The WLT supports urgent land purchase and protection projects all over the world. In our project areas in Misiones (Argentina), Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay our partners can still buy an acre of land for £50, on average. You can help save acres in specific project areas by earmarking your donation, or you can support the project in most urgent need of funding at the time by donating to the Buy an Acre Fund.

Argentina

Misiones Rainforest Corridor, Argentina

The Atlantic Forest is suffering from relentless habitat destruction. Just 1% of the original Atlantic Forest survives in Argentina and this project will protect one of the last strongholds of sub-tropical rainforest, in Misiones Province, Argentina.

How you can help:

This is a 'Buy an Acre Fund' project: A donation of £50 saves one acre of forest in Misiones, Argentina

Brazil

The Brazilian Rainforest Project

The Atlantic Rainforest is one of the most important eco-regions in the world, but only 7% of the original forests remain. The Brazilian Rainforest Project helps protect the Atlantic Forest against further losses.

How you can help:

This is a 'Buy an Acre Fund' project: A donation of £50 saves one acre of forest in Brazil

Also in Brazil: Tree planting projects

Ecuador

The Ecuador Rainforest Project

This Rainforest project helps safeguard Ecuador's diverse wildlife in an area where over 80% of the tropical rainforests have already been destroyed, leaving many species globally threatened.

How you can help:

This is a 'Buy an Acre Fund' project: A donation of £50 saves one acre of forest in Ecuador

Also in Ecuador: Carbon offsetting and Tree planting projects

Paraguay

The Paraguay Chaco/Pantanal Project

Paraguay is the meeting point for many different eco-regions, which create a rich and unique variety of wildlife habitats. Industrial agriculture threatens these habitats, so this project is working to protect habitats in the Dry Chaco, the Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest.

How you can help:

This is a 'Buy an Acre Fund' project: A donation of £50 saves one acre of grassland and wetland habitat in Paraguay

Also in Paraguay: Tree planting projects

Special Appeals

For urgent land purchase projects where land is more expensive than £50/acre: In some of our project areas the price of land is much higher than £50 an acre. These have been agreed as urgent priority habitats to protect and you can still help WLT save them by donating to our Special Appeals. Currently we have urgent appeals in Malaysian Borneo, India and Kenya. Because land prices vary enormously in these areas we cannot state a price per acre, but we can guarantee that when you support these appeals your donation will be used for land purchase and protection and nothing else.

India

Indian Elephant Corridors Appeal, India

The Elephant Corridor Project helps save important populations of Indian elephants by preventing forest fragmentation which seriously threatens the elephants' survival. The corridors link together existing wildlife reserves and not only provide a safe passage for elephants, but also a haven for other wildlife such as tigers. Two corridors have already been protected; one in Meghalaya State in north-east of India and one in Kerala State in the south. We are now fundraising to create new corridors in other areas of India.

How you can help:

This is a Special Appeal: Your donation will support land purchase and protection of habitat in India.

Kenya

Kenyan Grasslands Appeal

Grasslands in Kenya are becoming increasingly threatened and WLT is now involved in saving them. The Kinangop Grasslands of Kenya are the global stronghold of Sharpe’s Longclaw, an endangered bird species found only in Kenya. This habitat is without official protection and has almost entirely been cleared to make way for farmland. Nature Kenya, with the support of WLT, aim to purchase 50 acres of grassland habitat and restore it to its original state for the benefit of its wildlife.

How you can help:

This is a Special Appeal: Your donation will support land purchase and protection of habitat in Kenya.

Malaysia

Borneo Orang-utan Appeal

The forests of Borneo are disappearing before our eyes, which is bad news for Orang-utans and the other wildlife that depend on these forests for their survival.  It is thought that Orang-utan populations have halved over the last 20 years and they are now seriously threatened with extinction. The World Land Trust is working with Malaysian LEAP Conservancy to protect rainforest to ensure continuous habitat for Orang-utans. These forests also protect Pygmy Elephants, Sun Bears and other wildlife.

How you can help:

This is a Special Appeal: Your donation will support land purchase and protection of habitat in Malaysian Borneo.

The Philippines

Reef & Mangrove Appeal

The Reef & Mangrove Appeal was established to raise funding for urgent regeneration projects to assist the recovery of mangroves and restoration of coral reefs, both of which are incredibly diverse ecosystems with important roles in protecting the coasts against the forces of the sea.

Currently we are not actively fundraising for this appeal, but a new mangrove project is in the planning stages. When you support the Reef & Mangrove Appeal your donation will be used for this and any other future reef and mangrove projects.

Restoration and Habitat Protection Projects

Our restoration and habitat protection projects take place in areas where WLT supporters have already helped fund the purchase and protection of the land.

Carbon Balanced projects

Projects offering carbon offsetting for businesses and individuals

Ecuador & Mexico

Restoration Ecology Projects

As part of WLT's Restoration Ecology Projects, the Carbon Balanced Programme combines reduction of atmospheric carbon while providing secure habitats for threatened wildlife. Carbon Balanced projects include both reforestation of cleared land and protection of standing forest. Individuals and businesses can contribute to the WLT's conservation projects by offsetting carbon dioxide emissions that they are unable to avoid.

How you can help:

This is a Carbon Balanced project: Your donation will offset carbon emissions and protect important wildlife habitats.

Also in Ecuador: Land purchase & protection projects and tree planting projects

Tree Planting projects

Projects that reforest degraded land.

Brazil, Ecuador & Paraguay

Restoration Ecology Projects

As part of WLT's Restoration Ecology Projects, WLT's tree planting projects involve reforesting degraded areas of land within existing WLT-supported reserves to provide larger habitats for the benefit of endangered species of animals and plants. Currently our tree planting projects are helping regenerate low-altitude Ecuadorian Pacific Slope cloud forest, Andean sub-tropical montane forest, Tumbesian dry forest and Atlantic rainforest — all unique and severely threatened forest ecosystems.

The tree planting projects are funded by Scottish and Southern Energy.

Also in these countries: land purchase & protection projects (Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay) and carbon offsetting projects (in Ecuador)

Other Restoration and Habitat Protection Projects

United Kingdom

Kites Hill Reserve

Kites Hill Reserve covers over 40 acres (16 ha) of meadow and grassland and native woodland. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the reserve encompasses part of  an ancient beech woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Currently we are not actively fundraising for this reserve, but we welcome any support of the Kites Hill Reserve, which will contribute towards the ongoing management costs, which include tree planting and pond creation.
